1. A German fan hands you a fizzy drink that is half apple juice and half sparkling water. What is your reaction?

Ask why they ruined perfectly good apple juice. Drink it politely. It’s surprisingly refreshing. Shout “Apfelschorle!” and demand it replace regular water in your household.

2. You are meeting some German fans at a local pub at 7:00 PM. What time do you arrive?

7:15 PM. Fashionably late is the American way. 7:00 PM exactly. Right on the dot. 6:50 PM. If you aren’t 10 minutes early, you are aggressively late.

3. What is your current stance on wearing sandals with socks?

It is a fashion crime punishable by immediate exile. Only if I am quickly taking out the trash at night. It is peak ergonomic comfort and I am rocking it proudly at the stadium.

4. A fan looks at you and shouts, “Tor!” What just happened?

Someone scored a goal! They are calling me a bad name. They want to go on a tour of the city.

5. The pedestrian light is red, but there are absolutely no cars coming for miles. What do you do?

Cross the street immediately. Time is money. Look around to see if any children are watching before crossing. Stand completely still and wait for the green man. Rules are rules.

6. How do you toast with a German fan properly?

Clink glasses quickly while checking my phone messages. Lock intense eye contact, clink bottoms of the glasses, and shout “Prost!” Give them a high five instead.

7. Someone describes a situation as having “Schadenfreude.” What does that mean?

It’s a type of delicious chocolate cake. Finding sneaky enjoyment in someone else’s misfortune (like a rival team losing). A polite way of saying goodbye.

8. A large plate of Currywurst (sliced sausage covered in curry ketchup) is placed before you. Your move?

Ask for a side of ranch dressing to dip it in. Eat it slowly with a fork while questioning the flavor combination. Devour it instantly using a tiny wooden toothpick like a true street-food professional.

9. What does the word “Ausgezeichnet” mean to you now?

Excellent / Outstanding! An exit sign on the highway. A type of spicy mustard.

10. You hear a fan talking about “Die Mannschaft.” Who are they referring to?

The German National Soccer Team. The local mayor’s office. A rock band performing at halftime.

11. A German fan asks you for “sparkling” water instead of tap water. How do you respond?

Tell them tap water builds character and walk away. Hand them a soda instead. Produce a perfectly chilled bottle of highly carbonated water. Germans need their gas!

12. What are your thoughts on a giant 1-liter glass beer mug (a Maß)?

It’s way too heavy and the beer will get warm. Fun for a photo, but I prefer a normal pint glass. Lifting it is my new daily bicep workout. One for each hand, please.

13. A German fan gives you a piece of feedback that is brutally honest and direct. How do you take it?

Go to the bathroom and cry about my hurt feelings. Get defensive and change the subject immediately. Value their efficiency! They saved me 20 minutes of small talk.

14. What is a “pretzel” to you now?

A crunchy little snack that comes in a plastic bag from the vending machine. A hot mall snack dipped in artificial cheese sauce. A giant, soft, salted Brezel that requires two hands to carry and is eaten with sweet mustard.

15. Sunday afternoon arrives in your city during the tournament. What is your ideal activity?

Going grocery shopping and doing loud house renovations. Catching up on emails and running errands. Ruhetag! Absolute quiet, relaxation, cake, and coffee. No loud noises allowed.

16. The German fans start singing “Oh, wie ist das schön!” after a big win. What are you doing?

Plugging my ears and wishing they would speak English. Swaying awkwardly while holding my drink. Linking arms with the fans and swaying back and forth in perfect rhythm.

17. How do you feel about the concept of the Autobahn?

Terrified. Speed limits keep society safe. Sounds cool, but I’d be too scared to drive fast. It is a beautiful monument to human engineering and freedom of velocity.

18. Someone asks you to pass them a “Bier.” What do you hand them?

A light, watery diet beer in a aluminum can. An incredibly complex, fruity triple-IPA with a cartoon label. A crisp, cold, perfectly poured German Pilsner or Hefeweizen.

19. If someone tells you that your soccer knowledge is “not bad,” how should you feel?

Overjoyed! That is the highest level of German praise possible. Insulted. I thought I was an expert. Confused about why they are so unenthusiastic.

20. The World Cup wraps up and the fans head home. What’s your takeaway?

Glad things are quiet again. It was a fun cultural exchange. My life is now optimized. I am organizing my kitchen by serial number and buying a cuckoo clock.
